About us
We are parents, members of communities from all over Ontario, appalled by the way the Ministry of Education and the District School Boards are short-changing education facilities and programs. These authorities, fully aware of the insufficiency of funds but unwilling to take the blame for not providing enough, now try to force us to make the decision on the closing of our children’s schools.
We are scandalized by the fact that the closings and sales of schools are explained to us as improvements for our children’s education, and that this happens mainly in poor neighbourhoods and where new Canadians reside.
Over the last twelve years of provincial government control, education and educational facilities have deteriorated. None of the actors professionally involved in the field of education have stopped this gradual deterioration of our children’s possibilities for an equitable education. We realize that we, parents, concerned about our children’s education, for love and not for monetary reasons, have to respond to the threat posed by the professional educators.
In its November 2009 report “No Time for Complacency: education funding reality check”, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives states: “We need an independent body responsible for accountability and oversight for public education in Ontario; a body ….that has the resources to evaluate the effectiveness of school boards and the Government of Ontario in achieving our educational objectives.”
We parents, concerned about our children’s education for none but educational reasons, feel that we are the perfect body, represented through the school councils, to evaluate the effectiveness of our children’s educational programs. We believe that accountability to school councils is the way out of the quagmire 12 years of political and professional mismanagement have gotten us into. Therefore the current advisory status of school councils should be changed to make this possbile.
We ask for sufficient funds for schools and the necessary decision making authority for school councils! |
